How do I calculate a weighted grade point average?
Most diplomas from the University of Copenhagen do not state a grade point average.
If your diploma does not specify a grade point average, but a recipient of the diploma requests it, you can easily calculate a single/arithmetic average (where all values count equally) by adding up the sum of all your grades, and then dividing that sum by the total number of grades.
If you are asked to calculate a weighted average, you can calculate it yourself using the following three steps:
- Step 1: Multiply the grade for each course/subject element by the prescribed number of ECTS credits.
- Step 2: Add together the results of step 1.
- Step 3: Divide the result of step 2 by the number of ECTS credits for all the courses/subject elements included
Example:
Course | Grade | Number of ECTS | Grade x Number of ECTS |
Theory and Method | 4 | 10 | 40 |
Communication | 10 | 5 | 50 |
Bachelor Project | 7 | 20 | 140 |
Total | 35 | 230 |
Weighted average: 230/35 = 6,57
Please note:
- If you have the grade ‘Passed’ on your diploma, it should not be included in your calculation, as it does not have a numerical value.
- It is only possible to calculate the weighted average based on workload (ECTS), and not how challenging or advanced the courses are, since courses at Danish universities are not calculated according to such scales.
